Why did mattel inc., sell barbie dolls in japan that had asian facial features, black hair, and japanese-inspired fashion?

Mattel was meeting the demands of the consumer. If the company were to attempt to sell the typical white, blond-haired Barbie, the market would be slim in a Japanese culture. For Mattel to go global with their product, they must be willing to adjust that product for the demands of the market.
