Education became an important weapon against communism and rose in importance for middle class families in particular to see a better future for their children. However, schools in the 1950s also became battle grounds for desegregation as the original "separate but equal" court case of Plessy v. Ferguson was overruled by the Brown v. Board ruling. Schools were a hub of teenage culture and led to modern dating traditions and teenage sub-cultural trends seen today.
