West Berlin was an Enclave which means that it was surrounded on all sides by the Soviet Union, that is Eastern Germany. This was the heart of the cold war because it was supported by western countries while everything around it was supported by the Soviet Union. At one point in time they were even denied getting necessities from their allies so the western allies had to use airplanes to drop stuff into Berlin.
