I believe the answer is:
to bring about greater social equality.
Karl Marx believed that communism is a better method for wealth distribution which would lead to greater social equality.
But communism method fail to recognize factors such as there are some people that willing to work hard and some people who don't.
Forcing these group to have equal outcome contributed to the fall of Communist countries.
