Pike's expedition was to explore the lower portion of the Louisiana Purchase. The area was too large for Lewis and Clark to explore alone. Pike's expedition journeyed into the southern areas of the Louisiana purchase and into Spanish Territory. They didn't realize that they had entered Spanish territory. Unlike Lewis and Clark, Pike and his men were arrested. They were taken to Mexico City. They were then escorted back to the border.
