The two areas of the brain that are responsible for the initial storage of information are the hippocampus and amygdala.

The input and processing of the initial information of the brain in the limbic system consists of amygdala, hippocampus and limbic cortex out of which hippocampus and amygdala are mainly responsible for the initial storage of information.

The amygdala is situated in anterior temporal lobe within uncus, making reciprocal connection with hippocampus, hypothalamus, orbital frontal cortex and brain stem etc. Stimulus responses are mediated by the amygdala.

The hippocampus is an area in cerebral cortex comprising of three layers and plays a critical role in short-term memory. The hypothalamus receives the inputs from hippocampus via fornix and amygdala via the amygdalofugal pathway and stria terminalis.
