The purpose of the Sherman Antitrust Act was to destroy monopolies that were using their power to harm society.

The purpose of the Sherman anti-trust act was to prevent monopolies from controlling prices so was meant to maintain a competitive marketplace for protection of consumers. Monopolies were discouraged from artificially raising prices by curtailing trade or supply (hoarding).
