Tim has 18 toys, or p + 12

Ron has p toys

We know that Tim has 12 more toys than Ron, and in total, has 18

p + 12 = 18

isolate the p

p + 12 (-12) = 18 (-12)

p = 6

p = 6

Ron has 6 cars, or 6 being your answer

hope this helps
