x = 9/4 = 2.5 ft

Using the Pythagorean Theorem:

length of the ladder ² = distance from the base ² + height of the ladder ²

length ² = 2.5² + 9 ²

length = √87.25 = 9.34 ft

The ladder should always extend at least a couple feet beyond the height your are trying to reach. Then:

9.34 ft + 2 ft = 11.34 ft

Rounding it to the nearest greater integer we get 12 ft
