Many of the founding fathers thought that the social contract gave the government its legitimacy. This concept, that developed during the age of Enlightenment states that citizens of a particular country/region will voluntarily give up some of their freedoms in order to establish a government that helps to control society. This unwritten contract helps to maintain order in societies and results in the creation of laws that will benefit everyone.
