I first imagined a 12 by 9 rectangle and then figured about the area of the shaded part.

The 12 by 9 rectangle is 108 sq ft, But there is a empty part on the top left. That would be a 9 ft by 6 ft triangle.

The area of a triangle can be figured out with this formula: A = bh/2 Substitute b and h for 9 and 6 respectively.

A = (9 * 6)/2

A = 54/2

A = 27 sq. ft.
