a mountain range like the Himalayas, where Everest is at, as well as other huge peeks, is the product of Plate Tectonics, namely huge slabs of Earth's crust colliding with each other, where they collide, namely a Subduction Zone, one of the slabs "subducts", goes under, and the other gets on top. BTW you can see that clearly if you look at a photo of the San Andreas Fault, is very visible.
Anyway, when that occurs, the push of one slab against the other and friction acting on both slabs, create moutain ranges with peaks like Everest.
