The Risorgimento was led by Giuseppe Mazzini and his pupil, Giuseppe Garibaldi. This ultimately failed, but it was the aristocratic politician named Camillo di Cavour who finally, using the tools of realpolitik, united Italy under the crown of Sardinia.

Italy's unification, which was completed in 1870, was accomplished by the leadership of Camilo Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi. It was done with the help of foreign powers. Therefore, Italy became unified though Italian leadership and foreign help.
