The difference between an expression and an equation is that 1) an expression is something that doesn't have an = sign. On the other hand an equation has an equal sign.

An EQUATION has two sides. It has a left side, and a right side. There is also an equals sign that separates the two sides. It is a mathematical "sentence" that says two things are equal.

An EXPRESSION has no sides. It is a mathematical "phrase" that stands for a single number.
