Why are classical allegories not regarded as realistic fiction?

The definition of an allegory is “a story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation “, so by its very definition it cannot be regarded as realistic fiction. I'm pretty sure this is why.
