Why is St. Petersburg referred to as the northern capital of Russia?

There are many reasons for this. Some including there is a centuries old rivalry between St. Petersburg and the current capital of Moscow. A large number of industries, banks, and international corrections are located there as well. Another reason was that St. Petersburg at one point was the capitol of Russia. I hope this helps :)

A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other business are located in Saint Petersburg.
