(5 + 2)² - 40 + 3
5 + 2 = 7
7² = 49
49 - 40 = 9
9 + 3 = 12
12 is your answer

note: follow PEMDAS (Parenthesis, exponents/roots, multiply/divide, add/subtract) and go from left to right
