A thermometer is placed in water in order to measure the water’s temperature. What would cause the liquid in the thermometer to rise?

The only thing that makes the liquid of the thermometer rises up is that the temperature of the water is higher than the temperature of the liquid of the thermometer and a heat transfer process takes place from the water to the liquid of the thermometer by convection.
