What was the reason Britain and other European nations practiced the mercantilism theory?

to pull themselves out of their feudalism economy and increase their wealth and power. there were a lot of second and third sons becoming merchants after their older brothers inherited the land, and these merchants had more to trade than what people inside europe needed so they increased their trade outside their nation.
