Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney grew up as the son of a slaved holding family (C). He was born March 17, 1777, Calvert county, Maryland, U.S. and died October 12, 1864, Washington, D.C. His father was a rich and affluent tobacco grower in Calver county, Maryland. He was the fifth chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, remembered principally for the Dred Scott decision, argued that Scott was a slave and because of it he was not a citizen and was not able to sue in a federal court.
