The correct answer is
E. intimacy.
A is incorrect because if an artist wanted to show epic virtues, it would be better to use large scale for a portrait of his lover; B is incorrect for the same reason; C is incorrect because distance would be portrayed using other methods rather than small or large scale; D is incorrect for the same reason as A and B; E is correct because intimacy can be clearly seen using small scale as the artist could pay attention to every detail and make the portrait of a lover intricate and delicate.

An artist then might use a minute or a small scale for a lover's portrait since it may imply e. intimacy which is the answer. An intimacy can be characterize through friendship, romantic love, platonic love or a sexual activity. Hope this can help.
