Made killing at a distance more effiecient
Also it made arming, cothing and feeding soldiers cheaper than training them. So now young boys were recruited, armed, hopelessly undertrained and thrown into trench to die, hopefuly killing some opposing soldiers before that. It made soldiers a resource to be expended.
