Appeasement is the policy that commanded Anglo-French foreign policy during the 1930s: granting concessions to the dictatorial powers to evade conflict. It grew connected especially with Conservative Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Although at the time it was a popular and apparently pragmatic strategy, it is now broadly discredited as a policy of weakness that allowed Hitler to expand German territory unchecked.
