-8+(-9) = -17 <--- Negative If they are both negative, then you do the simple math part and then add the negative sign

7+(-3) = 4 <---- Positive If there are only one negative, then you get rid of the '+' and then the equation turns into 7-3. You would do the simple math.

5+(-12) = -7 <----- Negative. Here, there is only one negative sign but the negative number is greater than the positive number. So, you would do the math 5-12 and use the negative sign.

-12+5 = -7 <----- Negative Look at the one above this.
