Subtract the second equation from the first.
.. (5x +2y) -(-x +2y) = (-4) -(8)
.. 6x = -12
.. x = -2

.. -(-2) +2y = 8
.. 2y = 6
.. y = 3

The solution is (x, y) = (-2, 3).
