The top of a square table is covered with four equal square tiles. If the side length of each tile is decreased by 50%, how many tiles of the new size would be needed to cover the same table?

4squares would fit inside each of the four squares for a total of 16.

top of a square table is covered with four equal square tiles

Now it says

the side length of each tile is decreased by 50%

It means if the four equal square tiles had side =2x

Now its x

It means if earlier area was 4x^2 not the area is x^2

It means we have to use 4 small tiles to make one large tile

and to make 4 large tiles , we need 4*4 = 16 small tiles.

16 tiles of the new size would be needed to cover the same table.
