Southerners still had immense pride in the face of defeat, and wanted to prevent African Americans from gaining new rights, whom they terrorized through the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and implemented Sharecropping. Sharecropping was system that forced black citizens to buy crops from former masters which were loaned to them at rates impossible to fully pay off.
