Answer and explanation:

1. What is the first step in summarizing material?

Read the passage is the first step to get the information needed for the general ideal you want to summarize. Without knowing any kind of information or knowledge related to the material it is impossible to summarize it.

2. summarizing involves looking at the big picture whereas paraphrasing is focused a lot more on the details.

  • Summarizing is the act of taking lots of information to make a condensed version of it by just using some main ideas. It is not necessary to look for any detail from the main source but something more general that includes the necessary information.

  • Paraphrasing is when something written or spoken is expressed using different words. This is especially useful to clarify the idea or the meaning from the source. It is important to focus on any little detail to paraphrase something, not losing the original idea and for a better understanding of it.

3. Summarizing and paraphrasing help prevent which illegal activity?

Plagiarism. This is the practice of steal someone's work and claim it as one's own without changing nor adding anything new, nor giving credit. While the other ones can resort to something existing or can be a bad habit (like avoiding), none of them are done to steal or harm someone else's work, and they are not illegal. Plagiarism is, and it is very important to be aware of that.

If it is necessary to use something from a work that is not yours, then you should use summarizing and paraphrasing instead.
