When she stood up for African Americans on a bus.And said she wasn't going to sit on the back of the bus.

she stood up for her rights by not getting up when a white male wanted to take her seat on a bus. This made her a icon because this was the time DR martin dr martin luther king was speaking out on how everyone is equal no one is better than anyone else and she did exactly that when she didn't get up from her seat
