Why would Prince Metternich of Austria oppose the idea of Italian unification?

Prince Metternich of Austria considered the possibility of Italian unification incomprehensible in light of the fact that Italy had been partitioned socially and monetarily for a long time. After Napoleon's rule of Italy ended, the states were divided among Catholic countries. Austria took considerable control of Italy and therefore nationalism and unification of the country would reduce Austrian power. Metternich would argue Italy needed to remain under a traditional monarchy.
