The quadratic formula

x=(-b\pm√(b^2-4ac))/(2a)
for equation

ax^2+bx+c=0

In the given case

x^2-2x-4=0
a=1
b=-2
c=-4
Substitute in the quadratic equation

x=(-(-2)\pm√((-2)^2-4(1)(-4)))/(2(1))

=(2\pm√(4+16))/(2)

= 1\pm√(5)
