3 of nine softball players play outfield
3 of nine = 3/9
3/9 is your fraction for those who play outfield (3/9 simplified = 1/3)
9/9 - 3/9 = 6/9
6/9 is your fraction for those who do not play outfield (6/9 simplified = 2/3)
hope this helps

The phrase "3 out of 9" is the same as saying 3/9
Because the numerator (top of the fraction) and denominator (bottom of fraction) can both be divided by 3, we know we can divide both by 3 in order to simplify it.
This leaves us with 1/3
