I believe the term is nitrogen assimilation.
Plants cannot simply fix, or convert nitrogen into ammonia which is necessary for all living organisms. This is why they have to assimilate nitrogen, or rather absorb it for their own needs, unlike animals who can get their nitrogen from the food they eat.
