Not 100% sure but most likely the fact that wars can last for years keeping people away from there family until they are injured or the war ends

Liang-Po is a character from The Tiger’s Whisker, a folk tale from Korea. The tale talks about how Liang-Po, an affable farm and family man, was forced to serve in the army despite the fact that he abominated violence.

The war dragged on interminably, his family thought they would never see Liang-Po again. He came back, but he was a different man the war changed him. In time, his wife had the patience to understand and help her husband - a man that was hardened by war-; at the end Liang-Po was restored to his former self.
