FERPA or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act - gives parents certain rights to access children's education records. These rights are then transferred to children who reaches 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

This law applies to all schools that receive funds under applicable programs of the Department of Education in the U.S. The protection of FERPA starts on the first day of classes of the student's first term of enrollment.
