The tree of life is a metaphor and it expresses the idea that all of the life is related by common descent. Charles Darwin was known to be the first person to use this metaphor in modern biology. It was used many of times before for other purposes, just not for this. The evolutionary tree had shown that the relationships among various biological groups.
