Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can be added that Hermia, who will be attending Theseus's wedding together with her father, the Athenian nobleman Egeus, and two young men, Lysander and Demetrius, is in love with Lysander, but Egeus wishes her to marry Demetrius. She refuses to do so, and Theseus warns her that if she does not comply with her father's wish she will be sent to a convent, or even executed. In Ancient Greece—with the exception of Sparta—fathers were in charge of arranging the marriages for their daughters.
