1 (1)/(8)*2=2 (2)/(8) reduces to
2 (1)/(4)

2 * 1 1/8 =
2 * 9/8 =
18/8 which reduces to 9/4 or 2 1/4 miles

or u could have just did : 1 1/8 + 1 1/8 = 2 2/8 which reduces to 2 1/4 miles
