mean of the sample 8,3,7,3,4 is given by:

\mu=( \Sigma x_i)/(n)
summation of x is:

hence

\mu= (25)/(5)=5

The variance will be

\sigma^2= (\Sigma(x- \mu)^2)/(n)

\Sigma(x_i- \mu)^2= 22

\sigma^2= (22)/(5)=4.4
