I believe that warm air rises and cold air sinks during atmospheric convention. During atmospheric convection heat energy is transported through a medium normally gases or liquids. In the atmosphere this occurs when warm air with a lower density experiences an upward force until it cools and its density matches the surrounding air. The displaced air with lower density is replaced with other cold air which has higher density.
