3(4 + 3x) =
distribute the 3 to both 4 and 3x
12 + 9x
2(2x - 7) =
distribute the 2 to both 2x and -7
4x - 14
12 + 9x = 4x - 14
12 (-12) + 9x (-4x) = 4x (-4x) - 14 (-12)
5x = -26
5x/5 = -26/5
x = -26/5
