The formula for a parabola y = a(x-h)^2+k

will tell you how the given parabola differs from a "normal" entry-level, untransformed parabola y=x^2

The a (just to the right of the equal sign) will tell you if the parabola is opening up (positive a) or down (negative a) If a is 1 then the shape of the parabola is exactly the same as y=x^2 But if a>1 the parabola is stretched skinny and tall. If a<1 then the parabola is smashed flat, fat and wide. The number by the x shifts (slides, translates) right for minus a number, or left for plus a number. The number added on to the end shifts the parabola up for positive and down for negative. See image.
