In a heat engine, if 500 J of heat enters the system, and the piston does 300 J of work, what is the final internal (thermal) energy of the system if the initial energy is 1,500 J?

1,300 J

From energy conservation principle, first law of thermodynamics

Change in internal energy = heat input - work done by system

Change in internal =500-300= 200 J
Change in internal energy = final energy - initial energy
200= final energy - 1500

Total final energy = 200+1500
= 1700J
