5 1/4 - 3/4 = ?
5 x 4 = 20;
20 + 1 = 21 (21/4)
21/4 - 3/4 =18/4
18 ÷ 4 = 4 2/4
4 2/4 =
4 1/2
Hope this helps,

x= 5 1/4 - 3/4
x= ((5*4)+1)/4 - 3/4
x= 21/4 - 3/4
x= 18/4
x= 4 2/4
x= 4 1/2
x= 4 1/2 is the answer to (5 1/4 - 3/4), so it is 4 1/2 longer
Hope this helps! :)
