Zoe is solving the equation 3x – 4 = –10 for x.

She used the addition property of equality to isolate the variable term as shown.

3x – 4 = –10

3x – 4 + 4 = –10 + 4

3x = – 6

This is correct, because then 3x=-6, and you divide -6 by 3, and it equals -2. 3(-2)-4=-10. 3(-2)=-6. -6-4=-10. So, x=-2

3 - 4 = - 10
3 x = - 10 + 4
3 x = - 6
x = - 6/3 = - 2
