Enzymes are critical in facilitating biochemical reactions. A single point mutation on a gene that codes for an enzyme may affect the function of the respective enzyme. An enzyme protein produced by a defective gene may result to an alteration of a domain of an enzyme due to the production of a protein that folds abnormally. This would consequently affect the active site of the enzyme and make it lose its function.
