A plane is flying at 31,348 feet. It needs to rise to 37,000 feet in two stages. In stage 1, it rises 5% of its

initial altitude of 31,348 feet. In stage 2, it rises at a rate of 140.3 feet per minute. How many minutes does
it take for the plane to rise during stage 2?

Answer:

The plane needs 29.1 minutes to rise during stage 2.

Explanation:

Initially, the plane is flying at 31348 ft. It needs to rise to 37000 ft in two stages (S2).

The first stage (F), it rises 5%(P) of its initial altitude of 31348 ft (I).

F = (I*P)

F = (31348 ft* (5/100))=1567.4 ft

5% represents 1567.4 ft. It means, total alttitude for fist stage (T1) is F + I

T1 = F+I

T1 = 1567.4+31348 = 32915.4 ft

Second stage (S) it raises at a rate (R) of 140.3 ft/min. We need to calcualte the altitude for second stage, as the difference of S2 and T1.

S = S2 - T1

S = 37000 ft - 32915.4 ft

S = 4084.6 ft

S is the altitude required during the second stage with a rate R of 140.3 ft/min. We need to calculate the time (t), we can do it dividing S by R.

t = S/Rt = (4084.6 ft)/(140.3 ft/min)

t = 29.1 min

Finally, The plane needs 29.1 minutes to rise during stage 2.
