You isolate the unknown in this case y in one side of the equal sign and work the numbers.
y= 4/9+2/5=5•4+2•9/5•9= 20+18/45=38/45

Make equal denominators.
9*5=45
2/5=
5*9=45
2*9=18
4/9=
9*5=45
4*5=20
y-18/45=20/45
Add 18/45 to both sides.
y= 38/45 <- the simplest form
