First, you would have to put one fraction on one side and the other fraction on the other side. then you multiply 12 x 1 = 12 and then you multiply 3 x 4 = 12. They both have the same answer. That's how you can see if any fraction is equivalent.

If you multiply the denominator to 12 then you can tell. 3(4)=12, right? So if you multiply by 4 on the bottom and the top then 1/3 is equivalent to 4/12
