Explain how you can determine if 1/3 and 4/12 are equivalent fractions

You can see if they are equivalent by doing the butterfly method. First, you would have to put one fraction on one side and the other fraction on the other side. then you multiply 12 x 1 = 12 and then you multiply 3 x 4 = 12. They both have the same answer. That's how you can see if any fraction is equivalent.

If you multiply the denominator to 12 then you can tell. 3(4)=12, right? So if you multiply by 4 on the bottom and the top then 1/3 is equivalent to 4/12
