10z box = $5.90
1 oz = $5.90 ÷ 10 = $0.59

24 oz box = $6.48
1 oz = $6.48 ÷ 24 = $0.27

24 oz box is cheaper, it is a better buy

Answer:

Part a) Cereal A
0.59(\$)/(oz)

Part b) Cereal B
0.27(\$)/(oz)

The best buy is Cereal B

Explanation:

we know that

To find the unit price divide the price by the quantity

Let

x------> the price

y------> the quantity

U------> the unit price

so

U=(x)/(y)

Part a) we have

Cereal A

x=\$5.90

y=10\ oz

substitutes

Ua=(5.90)/(10)=0.59(\$)/(oz)

Part b) we have

Cereal B

x=\$6.48

y=24\ oz

substitutes

Ub=(6.48)/(24)=0.27(\$)/(oz)

Compare the unit prices

Ub<Ua

therefore

The best buy is Cereal B
